An acquaintance of mine fell for the Windows version. He insisted that the nice Indians he called (800#) were from Microsoft. I said no and explained how it works as I turned off remote desktop and turned as many rogue services as I could find. After that his computer has never worked right (random error messages, nonfunctional DVD, etc). Of course he blames me. Last time I went over I was unable to install new SW at all, so I am going to have to reinstall Windows. He forgot everything I taught him and accused me of screwing up the computer. That is probably correct, I probably turned off too many things (using Autoruns). Maybe next time he will actually send the $300 that the techs asked for and he won’t need my free services anymore, HA!
"By the way, I called my brother on another line while you've been talking. He's a federal agent and he has traced your call. You can expect a visit shortly, and to be arrested for computer fraud."
They hang up very quickly. I know they are most likely in another country, but it still scares the c*** out of them.
I got a call on my cell this morning from myself in Thailand. Lol
I got the Safari message on my iPad. I called because it is my mission in life to waste as much of their time as possible while teaching them American slang.
It’s so sad... what kind of black soul must you have to take advantage like that of a trusting and scared elderly person....
The ends justifies the means #TheClintons
LOL!! They probably have a hand in every scam there is!!
Because it’s like trying to swat flies in a shithouse.
Both companies are huge; taking legal action is like trying to spin an ocean liner around... It takes time.
Why do we trade with countries that defraud us?
Perhaps we should put a tariff on Indian technical support until they start arresting these people.
Next time I am going to mention my screen saver is the aging room at Peter Luger.
See how long it takes for them to catch on.
Trickle down from the WH
The trick these bozos pull is first of all they call internationally. There is no court of Jurisdiction to pull them into to sue their A$$e$ in. Secondly, they don't explicitly say "This is Microsoft tech support calling" or "This is Apple tech support" they say "This is Windows calling" or "This is Macintosh (or iPhone/iPad) calling) to report your computer/device is reporting a virus/error that we have to take care of. None of those is actionable because they are too generic and anyone could claim they are supporting those devices. They aren't using the company name.
Apple does go after these guys if they use the Trademarked Apple name and I am certain Microsoft does also. . . so they are careful not to.
“can barely understand them, the english is so bad”
Have we fallen so low that we even outsource our crime to India?
Is this something that doesnt require Admin privileges??
I’ll give it a shot...
Since 8-27-15, I have received 13 of those calls. A guy with a very heavy accent. I tell him I can’t understand him and then hang up. Once he called back and left a message for me to go F myself.

Ping, please.
Thanx.
Thanks, I forwarded this to our DIL.
Her son, our grandson, got scammed in the first week of school this fall semester at his new private school
We bought him the new Mac Air for his new private school. He got the phishing scam in the first week of school and fell for it without notifying his parents. When his mother came home with his sister, he told her that his Mac wasn’t working.
He showed her the warning, and she used her credit card to “clear up the problem”.
A few minutes later while limoing he and his sister to after school events, she got a text from her credit card that she had been phished and scammed.
She called the credit card and was told that the Mac repair people were scammers. They were sending her a new card.
The next morning she took the mal wared Mac Air to the local Apple store, they removed the bad stuff and told her to
never do that again.
Several of her son’s classmates got the same bad message. The phishers apparently targeted the new incoming freshmen.
Maybe, the upper classmates were too computer wise to fall for this.
A week or so later, her home office Mac got the same message. She knew what to do.
I didn’t talk to our DIL about this incident, my non techie wife did. So the specifics may be not that specific.
Thanks again.
My wife and I own Android phones and occasionally get obvious phishing attempts, and we ignore them.
I have been using the Chrome Browser for 3 years on my previous Win 7 pc and my current Tosh Win 10. I have never gotten a phishing attempt. They were regular shows on my old PC using the IE browser.
Since May of this year, I have been using an Acer Chromebook 15 as my main PC, and I have never received one of these Phishing attempts.
