What would he do, shoot me? The point is I'm dating the girl, not her father, and as a man with a plan and schedule of my own I'm not going to be taking direct orders from some guy who only periphery to the event, especially when he thinks he's going to scare me into toeing his line.

I would clarify though that I'm not talking about children dating. Back when I was 15 or 16, when the girl's dad said 11 sharp, I usually brought her back in right around 11 or so. Even as the punk I was then, I understood that it was perfectly reasonable for a dad to keep track of his 15 year old daughter. If I had encountered the gun-cleaning act, though, I probably would have found some way to thumb my nose at the guy.

I thought we were talking about teenagers dating. Thumbing your nose at a girl’s father is a sure-fire way to earn his distrust of you. It is called respect, and it sounds like you were one of those guys my Dad wanted me to steer clear of, with good reason.

I’m also guessing you don’t have any daughters of your own.
