A little FReeper help needed. Suddenly I have no audio on youtube videos. Not even the little speaker looking thing comes up. Has this happened to anyone before? Please advise.

Just on ‘youtube’ or is your volume icon missing on your computer, too? I had this happen on Windows 8.1 ... no volume control at all & I first noticed it when I tried to play youtube videos.

If this is your problem, here is the “fix” that worked for me:

If you’re using Win 7, 8 or 10, there is a trouble shooting feature that should identify the problem and fix it for you.

Go to settings and start from there.

Can you hear audio on other sites? Can you hear audio or video you have downloaded?

Have you tried rebooting? Checked your volume control?

Thanks. I switched my browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox and now I have audio.

Probably the ‘sound’ control in IE is on mute or low.

In IE, load a video and check to see whether the volume control is on mute to very low.

Since you are getting sound through other browsers, it sounds like an IE situation.

I have that occasionally, as I run several different browsers.

Some computers will allow you to mute video feeds individually, while others will mute everything if ‘muted’.

The speaker icon was missing on my computer, too, but I rebooted and I at least got that back. I switched to Firefox as my browser so I have audio on youtube when I’m on Firefox but not Internet Explorer.

I had a “fatal” laptop crash last fall and got some professional tech* help during the process of working through what happened & I ended up getting a new one. When I asked the tech what he would recommend for helping keep my new laptop safe, the first thing he said was NEVER use Internet Explorer. I wasn’t using it (had Pale Moon), now on Firefox since they have more regular security updates. Just thought I’d pass that little tidbit on about IE. When I lost my volume control, it was while using Firefox & I got it back using the link I referenced. Glad you got yours back so easily!! :-)

*This tech is great - he’s on a monthly contract for regular updates/service & problem solving for a company owned by a relative so it wasn’t somebody I picked up out of the phone book.

There’s no sound control at all. Not even the icon.

You won’t like this, but I had a similar problem. I checked the speaker connections, switched browsers, rebooted, and all the normal stuff but finally had to take the CPU in to be tested. It took a new sound card to restore it . . . along with a lot of other stuff on the card which I didn’t need. They don’t sell just sound cards anymore.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. This may be God’s way of giving me a clue as to how to respond my wife akses me what I want for Christmas.

Yeah. I’ve had that happen. - I just wait a day or two.
After that, it just comes back on its own.

Hope you get your problem solved.
I just wish the people that put videos up on Youtube
would not enter them where you only see the bottom
half of the screen!!!

depending on the situation, we don't have a lot of information to work with here but...

Sometimes with a hardware issue, windows will lose track of the fact that it has a sound device or even a connected speaker. This can happen for various reasons. I've seen it happen quite often when a machine resumes from hibernate mode. sometimes it's the wireless card, sometimes bluetooth, sometimes sound. Usually the easy way to fix it is to shut down the machine and disconnect the power for 30 seconds (remove the battery if a laptop). Then boot normally and everything will come back. Give that a shot and see what happens.

I tried Palemoon after FFox kept breaking too many of its own extensions/add-ons. Palemoon started breaking them around upgrade 20 to 21 or so.

I found another Mozille based browser that I use now. Cyberfox 32-bit. So far, it has kept all of my extensions/add-ons. It follows the Firefox upgrade numbering.
