With this action by Russia in Syria, why does Germany and the Spanish Civil war keep coming to mind?

Had the same thought myself when I read an article from the NY Times "Russia's strikes jolt analysis of its abilities"

The operation in Syria -- still relatively limited --has become, in effect, a testing ground for an increasingly confrontational and defiant Russia under Putin.

One way to tell would be troop rotation.

I would imagine the Pentagon is keeping a close eye on what is happening.

Not that it matters to the Obama White House.
