For me, the clunk is gone and XPP in a VirtualBox runs Office just fine.

Me too. Linux became my primary home OS around 2005/2006. I still keep a windows box around for the odd things that can't (yet) be done on Linux. I think the only thing left in that bucket is updating the maps on my GPS. Which reminds me, I need to boot up the windows machine and do that...

18 of my 30+ years in the field (including current position) have been spent using Unix or Linux as a primary development platform.
