I thought that it being a "kernel" meant that it wasn't that big. It was able to do all the basic stuff that an OS needed to do in a very small package.
Now they're proud that the kernel has become a cornfield and probably more hackable.

You and I seem to have the same idea of what an OS should be.
Unfortunately, we also seem to be in the minority.
