This is a really significant act of vandalism both symbolically and materially. Major damage has been done to a significant California historical landmark and a major religious center of worship for Catholics and as a non Catholic who has been there several times for those of other denominations. This vandalism including defacement of tombstones is far bigger than anything done before excepting the complete dismantling of the UDC memorial (a large one) in a Seattle cemetery about a decade ago. This is a significant and ominous development.
