Jennifer Hudson, Gloria Estefan, Harry Connick Jr. and other entertainers performed for a jubilant crowd Friday, Sept. 25, at a concert to welcome Pope Francis on his first visit to the U.S. and celebrate his message of faith and goodwill.
The event, called "A Journey in Faith," stretched for two hours at Madison Square Garden with performers standing on a white elevated stage that would soon transform into the altar from which the pope would celebrate Mass.
Hudson, the Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning singer, sang "Hallelujah" backed by an orchestra, and drew roars from the crowd. Estafan sang "Mas Alla," Connick sang "How Great Thou Art" and several Broadway actors performed in the 20,000-seat arena. The audience included dignitaries, members of religious orders and everyday Catholics who won tickets through their local parishes.
Actor Martin Sheen hosted the ceremony, produced by the Archdiocese of New York and featuring an opening performance by a Catholic choir from the Church of St. Charles Borromeo in Harlem. Clad in white robes, they stood on the stage decorated with white flowers and set under a giant crucifix suspended from the arena ceiling.

Stephen Colbert made a video appearance, welcoming to the arena "Catholics and the non-Catholics who arrived really early for a Knicks game." He apologized for not being at the Mass in person, but said he had promised CBS that he would "do (his) new talk show every night."
Additionally, a bishop took the stage and gave a brief history of the papacy including a roll call of pope names, noting there had been "23 Johns, 12 Piuses, six Pauls, 14 Clements, but one Peter and one Francis," which drew loud cheers.

Yes I did and I consider what he said. However, I am hopeful he learned a lot from being in the United States.
That’s wonderful mojo114.He tried his best to visit everyone.

Imagine all the babies who we’ve missed out on their wonderful contributions God had appointed them for... had they not been murdered......Artists, scientists, great men and woman we would have loved to see walk among us.....as well as the children they would have had.......and the generations which will never be.
No wonder God’s allowing the Muslim Hoards to come in.....they still have their babies like rabbits!
I felt that the coverage of the wonderful religious music during his visit was wonderful. The points he made about the family staying together were terrific.
He does not give the impression he is here to “learn something.”
It seems he came to our country to lecture us.
It also seems he missed some crucial days at Pope School where
They taught basic tenets of Christianity.
Imagine. Imagine all the adults, when they reach St.Peter, who will have to answer for their abortions.
The average family size in the United States is 3.59. The average children per Muslim household is 2.4
Where are you getting your stats?
DOH! Oh well, I guess this comes back to the old adage, don’t believe everything on the internet. But see the reason that hoax got so much traction is because it wouldn’t be surprising if he did say it.
Okay......1st Amendment.... The point flew right over my head. Have I interfered with someone’s First Amendment rights?
{The average family size in the United States is 3.59. The average children per Muslim household is 2.4}
If family size in US is 3.59, that means 1.59 children, which is about right not counting Mexican Immigrant children.
If Muslim households are having 2.4 they are reproducing themselves plus and natural born Americans are not.
One reason we need immigration (legal, screened) is because we are not reproducing ourselves.
So your point is that my right of free speech infringes your religious right? Seriously?
You would no doubt have some opinion to voice if Franklin Graham spoke to Congress about how we should be running our country.
You would have opinions if the media covered him non-stop.
Actually, the music has been the best part of this visit by the Pope. Much of it has been beautiful. Andrea Boccelli’s singing tonight was gorgeous.
Stop with your pure nastiness. We get it, you don’t like this Pope. Many don’t like his progressiveness, including me. But keep all the nasty vulgarities to yourself. It’s so low class.
Not addressing this to anyone in particular, but it seems strange to me that many people’s dander is up because a religious leader is preaching the Gospel in the US.
If a person is Catholic, they know the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of belief. The Pope, a validly ordained priest, has celebrated the sacrament in front of hundreds of thousands. He has demonstrated the beatitudes by feeding the hungry, visiting the imprisoned, and consoling the sorrowful.
For non-Catholics, the Pope has publicly reminded Americans, through Congress, of the dignity of human life. As stated above, he has demonstrated the Gospel message of feeding the hungry and visiting the imprisoned.
At some point, sinful and imperfect people need to measure these actions. Are they promoting the message of God’s love? Are they demonstrating by example what Jesus calls us to do in the Gospel?
For many who say “yes,” this may herald an impetus to be a more faithful believer in Christ. For the non-believer, it may inspire a positive feeling or example. For those who say “no,” perhaps an examination of expectations in appropriate. Are our expectations realistic?
“Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.” Mark 9:41
I’m pretty sure the Pope meant that at the time of the Crucifixion of Jesus the Apostles would have maybe thought that Christ had failed. They would soon find out with the Resurrection that Christ was victorious.
You might disagree with the Pope. but isn’t he is as Christian as those that follow and belong to those leftwing mainstream Protestant denominations?
I’m disappointed in the Pope as he seems worse than timid when in the company of tyrants like the Castro brothers and Obama. The world could use a Pope that fought like John Paul II against Communism, but unfortunately Francis is more like Neville Chamberlain.
He won’t fight communism. He has made it clear he is a communist.
What vulgarity?
I have a right to my opinion and have used no vulgarity.
Leaders of my faith are not crammed down your throat.
Mahaha, hiya
Give it to me one time now
Yeah, whoa, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho
Well, now
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to to go to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to sock it to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
When you want to come
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to to go to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to sock it to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
Come
(Oh, oh, oh)
But shoot it in the right direction
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Make making it your intention
(Ooh, yeah, oh, yeah)
Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
(Hit me)
Hit me
(Hit me)
Hit me with those laser beams

By the way. Accusations of “pure nastiness” are nasty.
{Not addressing this to anyone in particular, but it seems strange to me that many peoples dander is up because a religious leader is preaching the Gospel in the US.}
He is not “preaching the Gospel in the US” only. He was in front of Congress, the UN, Gettysburg and all over the media.
Why not give the same consideration to, say, Franklin Graham?
Most who are upset are not upset about this attention to a pope. Popes have visited before without engendering ire despite the unequal treatment they have been accorded. This pope has overreached.
