Prosecutor: Baby Bella 'screamed to be let out' in life of torment

The drug-addled mother of Bella Bond watched her boyfriend swath the tot's lifeless body in a garbage bag and stuff her in their refrigerator before the Dorchester couple went on a days-long heroin binge, a prosecutor said today.

"She was a demon and this was her time to die," Michael P. McCarthy, 35, and a fanatic of the occult, told Rachelle D. Bond, 40, one terrible day in May as he stood over Bella in the 2 1/2-year-old child's bedroom, according to assistant Suffolk District Attorney David Deakin.

McCarthy, his long blond hair spilling over his shoulders, was held without bail after pleading not guilty to murder and improper disposal of human remains.

Dorchester District Court Judge Thomas Kaplanes ordered Bond, her eyes downcast under a grubby gray hoodie, held on $1 million cash pending the couple's Oct. 20 probable cause hearing.

Bond's attorney Janice Bassil -- who had asked the judge to release her client on $250 bail -- told reporters afterward the mother "did the best she could."

Little Bella Bond's body was found in a trash bag on Deer Island in Boston Harbor on June 25. An image of her face was shared globally millions of times by law enforcement and through social media, but her identity remained a mystery for 85 days, until Friday, when authorities charged McCarthy, 35, with murder and Bond, 40, as an accessory after the fact.

Deakin this morning painted a horrific portrait of the little girl's tormented childhood.

A friend of the couple told police he frequently saw Bella crying, and saw both parents lock her in a closet for up to an hour.

"She screamed to be let out," the friend recalled, according to Deakin.

Both believed the little girl was possessed and must be punished, Deakin said.

Then, one night in late May, Deakin said Bond told police, "Bella was unwilling to go to bed and was being unruly. Mr. McCarthy said he would go in the back bedroom and try and calm her down. She found Mr. McCarthy standing over Bella, who was on a mattress on the floor, standing with his hand near Bella's abdomen.

All that baby was to the addict was a paycheck. That baby provided the addict a home, food and money. This is what our tax dollars going towards. Once the boyfriend murdered the baby, the addict hid the body in a refrigerator and then tried to bury her at sea. The addict needed the paycheck to keep coming in. As long as the state couldn’t identify the baby girl’s body the addict could keep collecting her drug money.
