admitted to Smith that he was shot in the left arm but managed to leave Waco without being identified by police or arrested. I'm not a judge, but I think that would get thrown out as that is quite a dubious chain-of-custody.

I’m not one either, but I would think unless you want to suggest the bullet was removed form the shootee and inserted into the late lamented Spaz, the only “broken” link in the chain of custody is the one between the gun from which it was fired and the aforementioned Spaz, and a good examination may fix that one.

It is an interesting legal question. A local cop goes and talks to him, but the only proof of where the departed Spaz acquired the bullet was his admission. Not enough to pick him up, but once dead it's okay to get the bullet.
