It can happen. Happened to me with a crush injury. He is very lucky, however he is in for a lot of severe pain and rehab.

Two years ago in May I had my surgery. I'm just now back to almost 100 percent. I'm not sure about the full recovery. Depending on the break, he will have some loss of strength on his upper extremities, particularly on one side. It may not be noticeable to the people around him, but he sure as heck will know.
