As you likely know, the first “Superbowl” was actually Superbowl III — the first two were called the NFL-AFL Championship at the time they were played.

Yep, I knew that what we now call “Super Bowl I” was not called that at the time the game was played.

As I recall, Pete Rozelle didn’t like the name “Super Bowl”. But then he embraced the name and decreed that the games be designated with Roman numerals.

But then this year, instead of “Super Bowl L”, we are told that this is “Super Bowl 50” without a Roman numeral designation. Why did the NFL abandon the Roman numerals this time? Do they think the people are so dumbed down that they would think it’s a letter L instead of the number 50 in Roman numerals????
