You are right about the pizzas. I don’t know what it is out here - occasionally there are ex-New Yorkers here who open Pizza restaurants, but not here in Ventura County, to the best of my knowledge.
One thing lots of people don’t know, is that NY has EXCELLent water! Which makes better coffee and tea, too. As well as pizza!
My friend also couldn’t get enough Wise potato chips when he returned; apparently it is all Lays out there (he was by Sacramento). Funny thing about the pizza; when he got back he couldn’t get enough of it. Any time he visited for dinner we’d start cooking and he’d insist on ordering pizza - went on for many months...
