Rico Rodriguez : The Specials' Trombonist Dies Aged 80

Rico Rodriguez was a ska and reggae musician who played with the band on songs including the 1979 hit A Message to You Rudy.

The Specials announced his death in a tweet on Friday.

It said: "Our dear friend Rico passed away today. We offer out deepest condolences to his family. His legacy will go on forever. RIP dear Rico"

He worked with many different musicians and producers during a lengthy career, including Prince Buster, Karl Pitterson and Jools Holland in his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

You know growing up in the UK in the early 1980s “Ghost Town” seemed so evocative of the way the country was going, everything was doom and gloom and the whole country was going to hell in a handbasket.

Remarkable to think that within a few short years Britain was boom town and many people including no doubt the members of The Specials were getting very rich indeed.

Oddly enough they never wrote a song congratulating Maggie Thatcher “This town is coming like a boom town”.

Still, it was great music and provided great memories.

The only Ska song about Thatcher I knew of was The English Beat's "Stand Down, Margaret."
