It may depend a lot upon what the word”sex” meant in 1966 vs 2015. In 1966 that may have involved a sophisticated and fully dressed woman smiling.

If sex doesn’t sell, why can’t I watch television without seeing ads for dick pills every commercial break?The article implies that if you are selling something that is non-sexual or non-violent, but you use sex and violence to sell it, then the results of your ad campaign won't be any better than if you had used some other advertising tactic instead.
The article doesn't talk about selling actual sex products, such as ED pills.
