Here in wv, we are frequently visited by a curious and almost friendly insect that I believe is a hoverfly. It is marked much like a hornet or wasp but just hovers around, generally staring at us as if curious. Never gets annoyingly close nor shows any signs of nesting or any aggression. He just stops by to visit during the day.

They feed mostly on nectar and pollen. So, they are looking for flowers.
