I haven’t had any real complaints about 8. I bought a couple laptops for my kids with 8, loaded 8.1 and have not seen any major issues. The girls were very happy with them—they love the touch screens. I don’t use the touch screen, so the interface is a bit clunky, but not a game-stopper. Boots and shutdowns are multiple times faster than 7. Windows 10 sounds much worse to me.

I like 10 better than 8 and 8.1. So far, I like it better than 7. I haven't upgraded my boys 8 laptops or the 7 communal desktop, yet, but will probably supervise them doing it this weekend. My oldest and my visiting nephew upgraded last week and both love it. They think it runs better. Both have PC gaming desktops they built out themselves. SSDs and lots of memory and nice video cards. I am a little jealous. I had to get an ssd for my laptop after seeing the performance boost. 😊

W8 is fine. I get the impression on FR that most of the W8 haters are a bunch of old fogies who can't stomach change. I have W7 and W8 machines. I like them both - a lot.
I've tried Linux and it works great, too.
One the best thing about W8 is how all the machines are linked to Family Security (took them years to get THAT right) and I can, if need be, make changes and add permissions from work if my sons need to get to a site that is not on the approved list.
I bought a W8 laptop that doesn't have a touch screen but it screams in movie conversions and photo editing.
I won't install W10 until they give the user control over the updates.
