This was the first item that caught my attention. OK, where did the other $4.5 million go?
Bumble Bee will also be required to spend $3 million to replace the outdated tuna ovens
OK, understandable.
The company will also pay $750,000 in fees, penalties and court costs
Do these court costs include paying the family's lawyers or does their pay come out of the family's $1.5 million share of the settlement?
The DAs Environmental Enforcement Fund will get $750,000 for the investigation and prosecution of Occupational Safety and Health Administration criminal cases and for improving enforcement related rules.
Huh? Wouldn't this be part of the $750,000 in fees and penalties already assessed?
The $6 million is the total of: $1.5 million to the worker’s family, $3 million that the company will spend to replace their equipment, $750,000 in fines, and an additional $750,000 to fund occupational safety investigations by the DA’s office. My guess is that that last part is not called a “fine” so it will be tax-deductible.
The government goons get a bigger cut than the victim considering their lawyers are already paid with tax dollars.
This was a criminal prosecution, so the private lawyers shouldn't be involved (but probably were). So any division of the money is between the survivors and their attorneys, and probably shouldn't be dealt with in the context of the criminal plea.
