Iconic Whistler's Mother On Display At The Clark [MA]

An iconic 19th century American painting that remains one of arts most famous works will be on view July 4th at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
James McNeill Whistlers most famous painting known today as Whistlers Mother is an 1871 portrait of the woman born as Anna Matilda McNeill. Curator Jay Clarke says the image became an American icon while on a cross-country tour during the 1930s.

From what we were told in a docent talk with the exhibit, Whistler was in a constant battle with his critics; that included the *naming* of this painting. Whistler often envisioned and entitled his works with the abstract language of music, calling them symphonies, compositions, harmonies, nocturnes, arrangements, and such.
This is supposed to be his model/mistress...
