Obama can afford to let Schumer cater to his base and “oppose” the deal. Obama can afford as many as twelve Democratic defections in the Senate and still not have his veto overridden. It will of course make it more difficult for Schumer to one day lead the Senate Democrats but considering his opposition, he will. Face it. This “deal” will not become American law but it will become policy until a new Administration chooses to alter or change it. The real significance of this “deal” is that it marks the beginning of the end of coercive American involvement in the affairs of the region. American disengagement is Israel’s primordial fear.
Unfortunately, many Israelis who should know better see Schumer’s opposition as hopeful ...
