He had permission to hunt, but he hunted a protected cat.
Not quite.
The cat was in a designated area. They had to lure it out of the protected area.
Kinda hard to say since the laws of Zimbabwe are what Mugabe said they are this morning.
But by my reading of the regulations, if you moved the hunt to Texas, it would have been entirely legal (baiting, private property near national park, etc), with the assumption that the animal is considered regulated by the state (which lions are not), but exotics aren't "wildlife." But for the sake of similarity for the discussion, assume wildlife, and it all seems legit.

Somehow, strangely, it’s possible to care about both. Shocking, huh?
I’ve been an animal lover all my life and I’m unapologetic about it. At the same time, I’m absolutely, vehemently against abortion under any circumstances.
Whatever punishments this guy suffers, he richly deserves them. If it were up to me, I’d smear him in bacon grease and throw him into a lion enclosure. (Hat tip to rikkir for an inspired idea).
I’m still surprised at the number of anti-hunting, anti-2nd Amendment Freepers that have shown themselves on these threads. Either that, or they are trolls.
Are you a vegan?
Bravo!
Could never be one of those. I love meat too much.
That said, I have no use for anyone who kills those gorgeous cats.
Thank you.
LOL!!!!!
Some animals are more equal than others ...
Just another “Two Minutes Hate” to manipulate the masses.
The Communist links to the Animal Rights movement are well-documented.
Yeah, well, I’m a woman and I’m entitled to my emotional views. And that’s how it is!
Blame Teddy Roosevelt for decades of animal trophies that grace the walls of American dens and man caves. Will they remove him from Mt. Rushmore?

BTW, I think Laura Ingraham got it right yesterday. She opined that the dentist’s need to pose with dead big cats was an attempt to compensate for...shortcomings.
*cough*
Don’t you think you’re getting a bit carried away?
The guides ought to have shown the dentist where the lion was, given him a rock and said, “Now go hunt”. I’m no big fan of hunting but it’s OK for food and clothing or thinning the herd. And I don’t have an issue with owning weapons for targets or clays, and protecting your home and family. And as much as I don’t care for what he did I do think he’s being savaged for it. It’s easy to climb on a keyboard and ride after him with the rest of the internet posse. Being pro-Cecil doesn’t mean a person is pro-abort, it’s that Cecil is being used to fill up the 24 hour news cycle. Ending abortion rests on changing hearts. Maybe if people understand that ending life the way the dentist did it will influence those to take a stand against killing babies.
I’m entitled to laugh at them. And at Laura Ingraham. Perhaps she’s suffering from a certain sort of “envy”.
And that’s how it is!
He wasn’t hunting, he was waiting for the lion to come to a baited area outside of the preserve. A team of modern day beaters pushed the animal to him. Not a real hunt.
Now, hunting an animal like a bear, in its natural habitat without the help of the beaters herding whatever is there and taking your chances with nature and the wild, that is hunting.
He’s going to take his beating, probably go out of business, but we don’t need any more extended coverage of this pseudo-hunter.
More important things going on.
I forgot to add the /s.
