An Ypsilanti pastor called upon parents Thursday to be a part of the solution in decreasing violence in the city and township.
Alex Easley, pastor of City of Hope Ministries in Ypsilanti, spoke on behalf of clergy across Washtenaw County at a press conference about rising gang violence in Ypsilanti on Thursday, July 23.
"Parents, I call you out today. Take care of your children and then you don't need state funding to help you raise your kids," he said.
At the press conference, law enforcement officials laid out a plan of temporary increased patrols and partnerships with the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners and churches in the area.
On July 12, 20-year-old Keandre Duff was gunned down at a block party in Ypsilanti a year after Keon Washington, 17, was fatally shot at a similar party. Duff faced charges for Washington's slaying, but the charges were dismissed in April.
Since Duff's killing, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township have seen at least seven shootings between members of two rival gangs, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
Easley said the root cause of the violence starts in he home.
"If we go out and raise our kids and teach them and don't be their friend, be the mother, be the father in the home, we can eliminate this," he said. "If we don't raise our kids in the home, we're going to keep meeting like this."
Easley recommended parents take advantage of resources in the community, such as education, law enforcement and jobs.
If there isn't a job, he said, go create one.
Easley also asked law enforcement to refrain from engaging in warfare with the teens and young men.
"We don't need episodes like are happening in other cities," he said.
Yipsi is a town with some problems but it is NOT Detroit or Flint
it is pretty decent little place (and immediately adjacent to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor). It also has a very good community college.
Some crime? Some poor people? Yes and yes. Open shooting warfare between street gangs like maybe Chicago or Detroit? That’s NOT what one would expect in Yipsi.
this is not a good indicator for the rest of America, really
Parents.... plural?
Why does Ypsilanti have gangs in the first place, and just who are they? The names of the victims/killers gives some hint but I want someone to say it out loud.
Un. of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Sort of like Moscow on Lake Superior or whatever.
Ypsi is home to Eastern Michigan University, formerly known as the Hurons before the PC crowd changed the name to the Eagles. Lately, I think “chickens” would be more appropriate. Town took a beating when the GM and Ford plants closed.

Yes Ann Arbor is Michigans Berkeley.
I lived in Ann Arbor and worked delivering mail in Ypsilanti for some time several decades ago.
they were at that time a world apart in many ways
Yeah, UofM spawned none other than our beloved William Ayers.
I remember being unsucessfully recruited by some leftist pukes...who insisted that their NEW POLITICS werent anything at all like the politics of “the past”...
That was in in 1968....perhaps ayers was one of them...as I dont remember any names whatsoever
My Daughter Teaches at a Charter School there at the H.S level.
For the most she’s got good kids, but every year she gets a Native or two with street attitude.
She’s been there 3 years. Several kids have been escorted from the class by the Police for
Either drugs or making threats. They don’t return.
I only live about 30 miles west and its a whole different planet here.
I head that. Ive been out that way...some nearly fifty years ago!!
Some places “time” seems to be “careful” to leave well enough alone.
An obvious racist.
yes Uof M... I know a fellow who got a very good education there but his professors were extremely leftwing to the extent that another possible student declined to apply to take his degree there
