I was deployed to next-door Uzbekistan in 2004. The Uzbek dictator Karimov was mild compared to “Turkmenbashi” as he called himself.
Gold plated statues of the Turkmen dear leader would spring up overnight & he would express his surprise & delight at these spontaneous “gifts” from his adoring people.
The Uzbeks laughed whenever I mentioned Turmenbashi.
Crazy people in that part of the world, it seems.

Thanks. Actually, the Uzbeks seemed OK; most are only nominal Muslims and they like their vodka, and there were some beautiful Uzbek girls working for KBR contractor. They spoke English and dressed most un-Islamically.
And boy do they hate Afghans! Burkaland is not for them.
