A laptop seems like the thing for you. But as for the speakers, please, think about getting one of these;
Bose SoundLink® Bluetooth® speaker III
They are pricey but...oh heavens...they're worth every penny. Small...

...and the sound is sooo rich and clean. I have one and use it for all sorts of applications. Regular drivers on one side and the sub woofer on the other.
Have a laptop now, have speakers galore and headphones. Everything from small speakers that will almost fit in your pocket to a Polk Audio set that sounds as good as most home stereos.
I’m a musician too, picky about sound if I want to just listen, and do some recording too, most of the time I’ll pull out headphones.
Laptop sucks for games though...I’m not a major gamer, but I do like a few older games. The layout of the laptop is uncomfortable for that. I built the computer that’s put up in my shed, video, sound and RAM just for performance for games and recording. Recording can take more resources than games, once you get a dozen tracks running and recording on top of that...it’s when you save the file that you see it. It can take longer to save a song than it takes to play it...
I built it with XP, didn’t bother with a way to get online, it will never be online, would have used Win98 or 2000, my favorite, but had better options for drivers, and know how to pare XP down so it runs much better than a factory install. Don’t like XP, but once I get it running right it does ok. Win2000 would fly on that machine, but harder to find the drivers and such and I think Audacity had issues with it.
Sure is different using the laptop...not much I can do to customize it, add some RAM that’s about it...Linux runs good on it though...
