Jasper Spires boarded the Red Line Metro train at Rhode Island Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, joining passengers from the District and elsewhere headed to various Fourth of July festivities, among them the Foo Fighters concert at RFK Stadium.

As the train rumbled toward its next stop, at NoMa-Gallaudet, a three-minute ride, D.C. police said, the 18-year-old Spires — who may have been high on synthetic drugs — tried to grab a cellphone tucked into the waistband of a recent American University graduate headed to a gathering with friends.

The two struggled, police said, and the terror began.

My Honky Express card: a Springfield XDS .45 in my right packet and two mags in my left. Never leave home without it.

"if some conscientious citizen had been armed"

Sad that no one was armed. Perfect example of the need for law abiding people, competent with weapons, to be able to Conceal- Carry - these victims were on a train when this happened- "Using your cell phone to get help- is all you need to protect yourself"- as anti-gun liberals advise us- would not work in this situation (as it doesn't in the majority of these incidents) .

Provided you would even get to use your cell phone before the psycho starts stabbing you- to make that 911 call- The police do not have a Star Trek Transporter, and are not going to be able instantaneously materialize into the moving train car to stop the nut case.

Wish more people understood this simple fact.

Sad that no one was armed.

It was D.C. Being found armed there will get you more jail time than the criminal who actually uses the weapon.

I sent a private reply but wanted to elaborate:

Anyone carrying a knife for personal protection had better understand that knife fighting is a practical martial art.

100% dead on accurate.

Anyone carrying a knife for personal protection including using it to come to the rescue of others had better have won some knife fights in their past.

I have, and not just practice fights with magic markers or blunted blades. BTW, in a real knife fight, everyone bleeds some unless you are VERY good and VERY fast. Or if the other person runs at the sight of a skillfully drawn blade (that happened twice -- for some reason the muggers decide I was no longer as attractive a target LOL).

Of course, in gaining knife fighting experience, I guess everyone has to start somewhere. Best of luck to you sir.

Likewise to you, sir!
