TOPICS: Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: bing; google
Listening to the radio this morning I heard someone state that 16% of US prison population is Mexican. I wasn't sure if it was illegal aliens or what. So I decided to search. Google gave me nothing, but bing gave me some valid results. I thought I would share.

Don't just compare the results (I only clipped the top 3), but look at the hit count. This is probably no surprise to many, but I thought some folks might find it interesting.

From what I’ve read, in CA, it’s more like 50%.

What I mean is that Bing found 233,000 results, Google found 190.

And that is a rather pointless comparison. If the 233,000 results were mostly unrelated to the actual topic and the 190 were it’s in Google’s favor. The real questions are relevance and whether the search engine is covertly censoring the results. A mere hit count comparison answers neither of those.

Does anyone know are there still any search engines that include a proximity operator so you can find pages with two or more words near each other, but not necessarily in an exact phrase?

The more interesting number is 25% of the Mexican population living in the U.S.
