All people are seeing DoD technology.

They are way ahead of the general public and let us see the old stuff.

For example, the F-117 was already flying in the early 70s. When was that finally released to the public?

At the time we were sill talking about the F-4 Phantoms that were used in Vietnam. They were even test flying the F-4 in the early 1950s.

Only by extremely generous definition of "flying", which would have the F-35 "flying" in the mid-90s. (But that's turning out well)
