I do appreciate for some type of uber-American, dismissing soccer (what is it with soccer? Do they get as equally snarky about curling or water polo or badminton?) is seen as a badge of honour but really, are you telling us you can’t cope with the very simple concept of scoring an own-goal? And why such a thing would be upsetting to a player in the dying seconds of the semi-final of a world championship?
Soccer is so popular around the world is because it is actually a very simple game, it can be played almost anywhere with anything remotely akin to a ball and with any number of players. Can the same be said for American Football, Baseball or Basketball?
I am all for American exceptionalism but showing what a big tough American you are by sneering at a sport that you are too ignorant to understand just makes you look kinda stupid, if you will forgive me for saying so.
