“Laura Bassett scored into her own net during second-half stoppage time, giving Japan a 2-1 victory over England on Wednesday in a Women’s World Cup semifinal.

The decisive goal came when Japan’s Nahomi Kawasumi drove up the right side and sent a cross into the middle for Yuki Ogimi. Bassett reached out with her right foot and caught the ball flush, inadvertently sending it toward her net. The ball struck the crossbar and bounced in before goalkeeper Karen Bardsley could stop it.”

BTW - stoppage time is the few minutes added onto the game due to people getting hurt. The actual clock doesn’t stop, but the ref keeps track of it. And when the regular game time is up (90 minutes), everyone finds out what the ref has added on.

At least she was trying to defend - one of the posters made it sound like she was just kicking it back to her keeper for the keeper to kick it up the field. That would have been REALLY embarassing.
