Furty was a great conductor but a fool for not getting out of Nazi Germany. He could have had a great career anywhere.

The story of his interactions with the Nazis (in the Wikipedia article on him) is interesting reading. He was fortunate that Hitler was a music lover, and fortunate to be one of the world’s greatest conductors, or he would have ended his life in a concentration camp many times over.
