Residents describe Michigan earthquake as 'a big thump'

TEKONSHA, MI — L.G. Rogers ran outside of his home on 13 Mile Road in Tekonsha Township Tuesday morning, certain he would find some kind of explosion.

Dishes and knick knacks rattled with the noise, though none fell or broke.

"I run outdoors because I thought it was an explosion of some kind," Rogers said as he and his wife Joan ate lunch in downtown Tekonsha.

Rogers later learned the noise was from an earthquake whose epicenter was on 12 1/2 Mile Road, surprisingly close to their home. He described what he heard as "a giant booming sound."

And he wasn't the only one.

"I thought somebody ran into the building. it was just a big thump," said Jeanette Shaffer as she shampooed a customer's hair at JaCee's Hair Salon in downtown Tekonsha.

Shaffer said Tuesday's earthquake in Michigan did not feel as strong as the quake that hit May 2 near Galesburg, even though it was closer. Tuesday's earthquake was measured at 3.3 magnitude with an epicenter listed as seven seven miles northeast of Union City, near Tekonsha in Calhoun County.

"Last time I was sitting in this chair," Shaffer said, pointing to a salon chair, "and my chair was rocking and rolling."

Tuesday's earthquake likely was an aftershock of the May 2 quake in Michigan, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey said. The May 2 quake was a 4.2 magnitude and occurred about five miles south of Galesburg.

Fracking played no rule in the earthquake, just as it was unrelated to the May 2 quake, scientists said.

Down the street from Shaffer's salon, Jodi Waid was standing at her counter in her pizzeria when she heard what she described as a thump.

"Honestly, it sounded like thunder, but it felt like the (garbage man was) emptying the dumpster out back." said Waid, who owns Waid Pizzeria.

The quake was felt mainly in Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Jackson and Branch counties, according to the U.S. Geological Society. However, there were scattered reports of people who felt the quake as far south as northern Indiana and Ohio and as far north as Grand Rapids.

Detrah Taylor, Tekonsha village manager, said after she heard the sound like an explosion, she went outside the village hall, expecting to see that someone had hit the building.

"We did feel it and we went outside and looked about," Taylor said.

"The buildings all shook here," said James Campfield, village manager in Union City.

But he said people seemed to want to know what happened more than they were concerned about their personal safety.

"A lot of people ran out into the street, wondering what was that noise," Campfield said.

He said he had stopped into the Center Stage Florist on North Broadway Street to say hello when the shake made its wooden floor seem to dip.

"People were looking to see what had fallen or whether someone had run into something," he said.

Many of the buildings in the downtown are made of brick. He said they knew it wasn't thunder because the noise and shake had a different sound and energy.

"It sounded like someone dropped and air conditioning unit on the roof of a building," he said. "...It was apparent very soon that we had just gone through a small earthquake."

No injuries or damages have been reported, according to Michigan State Police. Taylor said no one has called village offices about damage either.

"Even though they don't happen often in Michigan, earthquakes are a threat our emergency management officials are prepared and trained to handle," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement. "Today's event should serve as another reminder for Michiganders of the importance of personal preparedness for all kinds of emergencies and disasters."

Neither did I. One of these days I will actually feel it when it happens.

Must be a “first world Michigan problem” when you hate that you missed feeling the earthquake.

Now that Calhoun county has attracted some attention the liberals can start wanting the name changed.

San Diego just had some very unusual weather. A thundershowe. Probably not enough rain to measure but enough to call it unusual.

We have thunder booming here right now but that’s pretty standard for a Michigan summer.

It’s very unusual for us. It was just enough rain to force me to lower my flags.

You’d think that Michigan residents would be accustomed to hearing “big thumps”, with Michael Moore constantly waddling around and, um, eructing in their vicinity...

Liberals already blaming fracking despite the fact that there is no fracking in the area.

'Zero chance' fracking caused Michigan earthquake, scientist says

About 30 years ago I felt an earthquake in Michigan. No damage at all, but going through a quake is very unsettling.

Change it to Colquhoun, it’ll take them 150 more years to figure it out.

Oh, that’s what that was. Wasn’t a patch to the one a month or so ago.
