Florida cracks down on people posing pets as service animals
Business Insider ^ | 6-30-2015 | Bill Cotterell, Reuters

People who try to sneak their pets into restaurants, airplanes and other public places by claiming they are specially trained service animals could face 60 days in jail under a Florida law taking effect on Wednesday.

Judges also under the law could make the pet owners spend a month working with organizations serving people with real disabilities.

"I love my cat," Florida state Representative Jimmy Smith, a Republican who sponsored the legislation, said on Tuesday. "But I'm not taking my cat everywhere I go."

Smith said some pet owners are abusing the Americans with Disabilities Act by putting a guide dog harness or insignia on their animals and taking them into places that normally bar animals.

Pet owners can easily obtain service animal vests and registration documents, even for untrained pets, by sending as little as $75 to otherwise legitimate training facilities.

I was in Lead,SD. a few years ago. In came a family with their big mastiff without a leash, yes it was a pet friendly hotel. I complained to the manager about the dog not being on a leash.

He wasn't that upset, but he did go speak to the family, the man got mad and the manager relented.

SO, lesson to myself. DO NOT STAY IN A PET FRIENDLY HOTEL. Not only do I dislike animals in my house or where I sleep and/or eat. DOGS rub their butts on the carpets, often. Think on that one for a second. The same carpet you walk barefoot on, the same carpet you let your kids play on....

It’s big in Florida because a lot of the condos and homes in the many beach areas there do not allow pets, unless service animals.

Laws laws and more laws. More draconianism. More ridiculous laws. Already the average American commits felonies unknowingly on a daily basis. We need more of this?

Somebody gets it. My brother has a Border Collie. She converts from a frizbee monster to a perfectly behaved service dog when the vest comes out. They take the dog everywhere. He gets comments on the perfect behavior all the time.

Most Colorado restaurants and motels welcome customers with dogs.

Some people have allergies. We do not allow pets, even our own, in our mountain cabin. This keeps the place fur free for anyone who has allergies.

What ever happened to those ADA laws that required every pool to have a HANDICAP HOIST to lower people in wheelchairs into the pool ?

“But, but my 110 lb. Great Dane is a trained psychic protection and love providing animal. Horrors!! Does this mean I can’t take him on a crowded single class, a.k.a., sardine squashed, regional jet with me??”

Only allowed if he sits in your lap.

“but there was a fear of this getting way out of control...with hundreds of people intimidating management to allow their pets into the facility.”

I think dogs should be allowed in most office work environments. The suits need to be brought down to earth. Dogs are the ideal tools for doing exactly that.
That is my fatwa.

Good.

I am sick of seeing animals, particularly DOGS, walking around Winn-Dixie and Publix stores.

Someone recently brought one into a health club where I was working out.

Ridiculous.

“The manager agreed with me, but told me that he claimed it was a service dog, and they are not allowed to question if someone makes that claim.”

So I could cut the tail off my Guide gator, paint him brown and claim he is my service dog?

You have to have a handicapped placard to park in handicapped spots. Why not have these animal with a special tag on their leash the same way? Why are they so fragile they don’t have to prove their animal is a service dog?

My impression was that you could take him in, as is, and claim he is your service gator - and they would not question it.

Why cut the tail off the animal and paint it?

Just tell anyone who questions you: “Sure, he LOOKS like a gator, but he IDENTIFIES as Chesapeake Bay Retriever, so you must treat him as such or YOU are a bigot”.

SCOTUS recently ruled in "Bob" VS State of Confusion that while the wording is clear in the ADA regarding the requirement for mechanical lifts in swimming pools, simply pushing people in wheelchairs off the end of the diving board meets ADA requirements, because when interpreting such a law, “the ‘meaning — or ambiguity — of certain words or phrases may only become evident when placed in context.’”

She couldn't make change and had to count the bills three times.

My 10-year-old son can make change (when he doesn't overthink it), and my 8-year-old daughter isn't far behind - she's real good at spending her allowance (and mine, for that matter), not so good at accounting for it yet.
