Spray with a water hose has worked every time I have tried it, as long as the cat perceives the water as coming from above.

Spray from below prolly not.

As others have noted I have never seen a cat die in a tree. They turn tail and go down when they get hungry (or bored).

If the cat is in a bush this would probably work
