My dad told me of time in his youth (late 1930’s) outside Kansas City where they would go trap muskrats, skin them for the pelts and then take the carcasses downtown and sell them as rabbits.

Guys from the south I served with told of hunting rats and selling them in the darker parts of town as squirrel after skinning them. They said the scam worked until it was demanded they leave the paws on for ID.

No mention if there was an objection to the taste or not.

Still do it around here with Coon. Blacks for Grand Rapids will come out to the fur shed wanting fresh Coon Carcasses. Won’t buy any without the feet still on. Said his customers think he is selling them road kill opossum.
