Rise in accidental gunshots by L.A. County deputies follows new firearm [Smith & Wesson M&P9]
L A Times ^ | Cindy Chang

Posted on 06/14/2015 7:09:29 PM PDT by BenLurkin

ne sheriff's deputy shot himself in the leg while pulling out his gun to confront a suspect..

Another accidentally fired a bullet in a restroom stall. A third deputy stumbled over a stroller in a closet as he was searching for a suspect, squeezing off a round that went through a wall and lodged in a piece of furniture in the next room.

Accidental gunshots by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have more than doubled in two years, endangering bystanders and occasionally injuring deputies. The jump coincides with the department's move to a new handgun that lacks a safety lever and requires less pressure to pull the trigger.

...

The M&P has obvious benefits. It is easier to shoot accurately, can be fired more reliably under stress and is a better fit for people with small hands. The switch was prompted in part by the threat of a lawsuit by women who had failed the Sheriff's Academy. More recruits — including more women — are now passing the firearms test, and veteran deputies are also logging better scores at the firing range.

But the sharp increase in accidental discharges has prompted an investigation by the Sheriff's Department's new inspector general. Critics say this type of semiautomatic, which is widespread in law enforcement and includes the Glock used by many agencies, is too easy to misfire.

...

The M&P is made of lightweight polymer, with a hand grip that comes in three sizes. Firing a round is as simple as pulling the trigger with a consistent 6 to 8 pounds of pressure.

Sheriff's deputies have the option of sticking with the Beretta, and some have, saying they are used to it. But many who have switched to the M&P say their shooting has improved.

“Are you referring to the act of inserting cartridges into the magazine, or the act of inserting a filled magazine into the pistol?”

I’m talking about loading and reloading empty magazines. Those damned things are damned hard.

"consistent 6 to 8 pounds of pressure."

That is a "light" trigger? Couple that with low IQ cops that cannot be trained about trigger finger discipline and you get this. Give them a Sig with a 12 lb first DA pull if the idiots can't keep their booger picker off the trigger.

And liberals say only cops should be allowed firearms.

“If you have to reload magazines in a combat situation, aren’t you already eyeball deep in s***??? ;-)”

Yea!You are in deep crap.Thats why you should always carry an extra box of ammo. You never know when you’ll need it.

Especially if your backup is going to take awhile getting to you.

Thanks. I have the same issue with Glock mags ... jamming the last two or three rounds in is bloody difficult.

That’s what I am thinking. There is an 8.5 lb trigger available as well.

"Factory Glocks have a 5.5lbs trigger pull."

And many of us bring it down from there without shooting our gonads and toes off. Unless it was a competition gun, getting to to 4-4.5 lbs is just fine.

You are never going to make it a 1911 trigger, but down at that level it is not fighting you. It is a combat gun, not a bullseye pistol

That's what I thought too, the officer in the background appears to be laughing.

"Are they doing the locomotion?"

Be kind, If that is the LASD, that is as close to close order drill as they are likely to achieve. They are possibly the least respected LEO in SoCal.

A number of cops have shot themselves in the arse on re-holstering their Glocks by leaving their finger inside the trigger guard. Needless to say, this is dumb and avoidable, and understandably underreported...

Those Are NOT ACCIDENTS, we call that:
Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, Negligent Disccharge of a Firearm, Reckless Endangerment involving of a Firearm, These CRIMES almost always results in Jail Time and Probation if you don’t have a Magic Blue Costume, if an INJURY occurs, PRISON!

Yes, my safety is always on ‘fire’, but I leave the chamber empty until there’s a threat or other impending need to fire (I prefer SA). For me, it’s a lot easier and quicker to rack the slide than to fumble with a safety.

LOL! Right. Or, at least, “can be fired MORE under stress”
