Correct me if I am wrong, there used to be a fairly large nation called Kurdistan.

I don't know if there was actually a Kurdish nation but I believe there is an ever shifting "Kurdistan" region. They were once the dominant people from Pakistan to Turkey (North of the Arabian Peninsula.)

I think they were once a distinct ethnic group but these days are more of a socio-political-cultural group.

They speak an Iranian language known as Kurdish, and comprise the majority of the population of the region – however, included therein are Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Azeri, Jewish, Ossetian, Persian, and Turkic communities. Most inhabitants are Muslim, but adherents to other religions are present as well – including Yazidis, the Yarsan, Alevis, Christians, and Jews.
