They served together, died together and are buried together. I really don’t see a good reason to separate them now.

Waste of time, money and misplaced effort.

The 388 persons that were among the dead are long gone. If we are to believe our Creator, the real person is the immaterial soul, long since departed. What remains is a tent that was used to house the soul. It is worthless and isn't the person in the first place.

I’ve got a cousin on the Arizona. The environmental whackos want the ships removed because they are still leaking oil.

I haven’t heard that about the eviros and the Arizona (and I’d really like to see them try it)

There has been talk of building some sort of cofferdam around the ship. There’s still a lot of fuel oil (and we’re talking really nasty bunker b stuff) in her and the hull is deteriorating. If the hull lets loose it’s going to be a huge mess. But there’s a worry that the hull is already too fragile to drill into for removal AND that the oil may actually be providing the structural support necessary to prevent a collapse.

I read that the unknown soldier from the Vietnam war was recently identified, removed and placed in his own grave.
Actually, that took place in 1998.

The oil can be displaced with seawater.

I can’t feature that they can’t get a few holes in her hull with hot taps. We drill some miserable crap in the oilfield to tap lines in that manner.

I dream of a day without wackos of any sort... when I die. I hope I am able to observe and laugh.

Yes, but only if it can be replaced at the same time the oil is being pumped out.

The concern is that drilling into the ship will cause a rupture. The oil will escape and be replaced by seawater (which is more dense) at an uncontrolled rate. Causing a cascading collapse of the hull.

Also, keep in mind that the oil bunkers were outboard of the ship’s vitals, to act as an additional protective measure. There may still be significant pockets of air in the ship, (I think the Pearl Harbor BBs were at Condition Yoke at the start of the attack, with partial watertight integrity) that could be replaced by oil and/or seawater during a rupture.

It makes me wonder what our technology will be like a thousand years from now

When Chinese and Persian archaeologists dig up Bruce Jenner, they will find a male skeleton and two water balloons.

Not sure their technology will help understand what the water balloons' purpose was.

And most of the people who knew them are dead, too.

In a thousand years some FReeper will be asking,

"Why resurrect them now?"

And Jim Robinson will say...
