Stanford visit

Posted on 06/09/2015 7:30:27 AM PDT by rey

I will be visiting Standford, CA for a few days while my daughter attends a camp. We wish to stay at a hotel within 10 miles or so of campus. I am unfamiliar with the area and do not wish to end up in a poor section of town. When I search for affordable rooms the service tries to put me in Fremont or near the San Jose Airport etc. AS I do not know these areas, I thought I'd ask the advice of some Freepers.

There are even efforts afoot to gentrify East Paly!

But agreed, stay away from there if you don't have to be there.

There may be some OK hotels a little further north of there, like San Carlos or San Mateo.

Also: AVOID FRIGGIN' OAKLAND

Sister went to Stanford, I went for summer session.

Country Inn, in Palo Alto.

Reasonable, close as heck.

Dont go Cross the highway into East Palo Alto, except to the Ikea.

Will I need to go to Ikea to get furniture for the room?

How’s Sunnyvale near 101 and Mathilda?

Last fall, when we went up to see the USC-Stanford game, we stayed at the Larkspur Landing in Sunnyvale. It’s an excellent hotel, and although it’s usually pricy, we got a good deal on one of those Internet hotel sites. There are quite a few good motels on El Camino Real just south of the campus.

I stayed at a vacant frat for my summer and the room was furnished.

I doubt you’d need to buy furniture just for summer camp, but on the off-chance that you do, that is a great place to do it —just don’t venture into any of the rest of East Palo Alto.

It is hard to confuse East Palo Alto with the rest of the city; highway 101 runs North/South and neatly bisects the two. The overpass is 300 meters, but from a economic and cultural standpoint it might as well be 100 miles long. Very many other people with experience in Palo Alto say the same thing.

That is a good location, not dangerous.

Sunnyvale is rather tony and most homes go for over $1 million.

I knew an engineering family very near the location you pointed out and they were wealthy.
