The extremist Westboro Baptist Church won't have to travel far for its next protest.
That's because on Sunday afternoon, Planting Peace, "a non-profit organization founded in 2004 for the purpose of spreading peace in a hurting world," plans to hold a wedding between Gandalf and Dumbledore across from the hate group's headquarters in Topeka, Kansas.
The marriage of the characters, played by volunteer actors, is a culmination of tweets between a fan of JK Rowling and the author's spat with the anti-gay 'church' on Twitter.
Shortly after Ireland voted to legalize same-sex marriage, @justaoifethings tweeted: "@jk_rowling proud to see us being so open and accepting, at long last! I hope Dumbledore and all witches and wizards feel welcome here."
Rowling replied, "Then they could get married IN IRELAND!"
Three days later, the Westboro Baptist Church tweeted: "So @jk_rowling wants Dumbledore & Gandalf to marry in Ireland; if it happens, WBC will picket!"
Rowling shot back with: "@WBCsigns Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls."
Aaron Jackson, the head of Planting Peace, told the Irish Times that "when we read the battle between JK Rowling and the Westboro Baptist Church, we instantly connected with Ms Rowling’s message on many levels. The Equality House was founded to take a stand against the hurtful words and actions of hate groups like the WBC.”
Equality House, by the way, is painted top-to-bottom in rainbow colours, the universal symbol of the gay rights movement.
On Saturday, WBC members picketed Beau Biden's funeral in Wilmington, Del. WBC has gained notoriety for picketing funerals of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq while carrying signs that read, Thank God For Dead Soldiers, Fag Troops, God Blew Up The Troops, and America Is Doomed.
Generally you cannot use a character as a political prop if you do not own the rights to it.
If you can, why not use Dumbdorf as a character to promote homo change therapy counseling?
