Nazis served kohlrabi to American POWs

First Lady Michelle Obama is growing German turnips in the White House garden, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

Mrs. Obama offered students visiting the White House this week a “healthy meal,” which her anti-obesity group Let’s Move claimed was “harvested from the Kitchen Garden [Wednesday] morning.”

Or just plain sauerkraut (cabbage). I LOOOVE sauerkraut. Make our own family dish, too. There is not enough sauerkraut offered for hot dogs.

They’re not really turnips, that’s why, I guess.

Actually kohl means cabbage, and rabi means turnip. It is a cabbage cultivar which just looks like turnip, apparently. I am not personally familiar with it, but that is what I found.

...my play on a little late Friday humor

Glad to hear that; didn't want to have to pull the Daikon radishes, Jalapeno peppers, Roma tomatoes, or any other evil veggies or fruit from my garden because they got started someplace we've fought, sometime in the past, for some reason or another.

Besides, life is barely worth living without kimchee, sauerkraut, and sometimes sushi.

and sometimes sushi

My wife and I tried sushi with other friends in the '80's.

Ewwww!

My now grown children took me out to a sushi restaurant not long ago.

Still Ewwww!

Different strokes for different folks :-)

To add to the definition of foodie: idiots that take a lot of time to take pictures of the food and post to social media and then bitch about their food being cold.

I don’t know why turnips get such a bad rap; I like them, cooked or raw.

Sushi? Oh; you mean that stuff I call bait.
Also beware the intestinal parasites in raw fish.

“Food hipsters... you know, the people who have to be eating something you’ve probably never heard of because you’re not as hip as them. They also can be identified by their habit of giving restaurants everyone else likes one star reviews on Yelp, because they wouldn’t put avocado on their burger or some such nonsense.”

HA. O please. Food hipsters would eat the devil’s rear end and tell you it was delicious. You know...I’ve noticed a increase in this totally annoying, irrelevant, and non-pioneering subculture.

When I was stationed in Germany many, MANY years ago, it seemed every gasthaus I frequented had spaetzele as a side with the schnitzel. Of course, it could have been a regional thing.

I was never offered German potato salad.

I remember enjoying raw turnip slices as a kid. Only had it at my grandmother’s house. She diced them and put them in with turnip greens. I think people don’t know what to do with a turnip now, so they just aren’t used much.

I like kohlrabi but that is the way it is sold in the store not “Ferman turnip”.
