I wouldn't be surprised that we did something this stupid. Our blowback time is usually around 20 years between when we ally with a lesser evil and when it becomes a greater evil, for example the "friends" we made of jihadists to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan to 9/11. This would have a blowback time of about 20 days.
However I am not buying that it was in some declassified memos. The two purposes for classification are to protect the interests of the United States and to cover the butts of those in the DoD (and other classifying agencies) who screw things up. Declassifying this would break both of those reasons.

Declassifying this would break both of those reasons.That was the part that bothered me as well. As another poster indicated, this is probably far deeper that it appears. Maybe this release allows those in the know to dismiss it more readily as it falls into the "tin foil" realm.
