NEW YORK Hidden in the attention being paid to David Letterman leading to his May 20 retirement is the knowledge that it will also mean the end of a regular television role for America's bandleader, Paul Shaffer.
The gravel-voiced sidekick, who's 65, isn't ready to leave show business even with the gig of a lifetime coming to a close after 33 years.
"Of course, I had the old mixed feelings, sadness, etcetera," Shaffer said during an interview in his office behind the Ed Sullivan Theater. "Now I have come around to just being absolutely thankful for such a wonderful run, such a long run, working for a guy who has been nothing but encouraging to me."
Shaffer is a walking trivia answer of show biz credits: bandleader for the original "Saturday Night Live" troupe, same role for the Blues Brothers, part composer of the 1980s hit "It's Raining Men" and the "Late Show" theme, cringe-worthy record executive Artie Fufkin in "This is Spinal Tap" and music director for the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions. If he hadn't neglected to return Jerry Seinfeld's call, you may have known him as George Costanza, too.

That's right. They did have that name.
A classic! :-)
I am very disappointed.
I can not fathom that nobody has posted the picture of Curly Bill’s character from the movie “Tombstone” stating:
Well BYE!
There was a band?
He will cease degrading the airwaves on May 20th! That just happens to be my wife and I’s 40th wedding anniversary! What a great present!
Congrats! Enjoy!
Have you seen the guitarist for the Katmen? He really kicks butt just as much as Setzer. Think his name is Darrell Higham (or something like that). He also gigs with Imelda May.
With Gary Burton??!!!

Haven’t watched a show in over a decade. Letterman ceased being funny.
That would be a winner!
“Tell me when will you be mine ? Quando quando quando quando ?”
Haven’t watched Letterman in so long I forgot about Shaffer....I guess the creepy announcer guy will have to retire too.
I tell people who ask me how old I am - I’m so old I remember when Davis Letterman was still funny.
Amen.....
And don’t forget the fornicating with interns whilst being married and a father....
Setzer’s always been great!
I just witnessed the weirdest exchange between CNN’s Brooke Baldwin and Jake Tapper with Rupert Jee, owner of the Hello Deli in NYC (located at the Sullivan Theater, where Dave Letterman broadcasts his show.) Rupert has been a frequent Letterman guest for 22 years. Jake asked him: “Are you friends with Dave?”, and Rupert says “No”. Then Brooke asks: “Have you been to Dave’s house or to his Montana ranch?”, and Rupert says: “No”. So then Jake, incredulous, says [paraphrasing]: “Do you see Dave outside of your show skits?”, and Rupert says: “No”.
Brooke and Jake were embarrassed at this admission from Rupert. It’s as if they were thinking... “How could this be?” Oh, Liberal Minds!
