Over the years, as I’ve viewed other items that Roddenberry wrote or produced (including his earlier series “The Lieutenant”), prior to Trek, I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a single one in which female characters are particularly well presented. He seemed to write them all as rather two-dimensional entities, as either airheads or sexpots.
Well, he never came across as a nice guy.
Both actresses that played Nurse Chapel and Uhura were sleeping with the boss Gene Roddenberry.
Gene Coon who did much of the writing and directing once walked into Roddenberry’s office to talk to him about something and while they were talking in comes Uhura from the next room wearing just a shirt that belong to Roddenberry....
From what I have read on Roddenberry he was quite the user of drugs which caused the studio to sidetrack him from the future Star Trek movies as he became erratic.
After “Star Trek” Roddenberry wrote a screenplay for an R rated movie that involved teachers having sex with students and murders of female students. He’s listed as producer of the film as well.
I saw enough of the film not to want to see it again. Its sick and toxic. The guy that married Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda and got them naked on the movie screens, Roger Vadim, was the director.
BTW James Doohan got a part in the movie.
This is a very dark side of Gene Roddenberry.
