Horrific moment police dog savages man's face after he puts his hands up
Daily Mail ^ | 5/1/15 | Sara Malm

A Utah man is suing the local police force after one of its dogs attacked him during an arrest, after he had put his hands up and surrendered.

Martin Lee Hoogveldt, 33, had already given himself up after armed police entered his home in response to a disturbing-the-peace complaint in 2013, but the dog still jumped at him, clamping its jaws around his face.

The dog handler's body camera captured the horrific attack, and can be seen struggling to get the dog, a German shepherd called Pyro, to let go of Hoogveldt's face.

He must have been wanted for acts of terrorism.

Oh wait, this was over disposing of a Christmas tree?

This, like so many of these stories where cops have begun to be less like cops and more like an out of control gang, all have a common foundation. I think you can trace it all back to when police departments began to unionize. Pre-union, a cop has allegiance to the public. Post-union, a cop is no longer responsive to the public, his allegiance is to his union. Worse, the union, by design, does not deal in individuals, it deals in the the group, the mass, the mob. Individuals are no longer responsible.

Psychologically, over time, this has to have a corrosive effect on the police force. Instead of responsible individuals you now have group-think union thugs who know they can push the city and the citizens around. This is a bad development. Stories like this one, and others, are the outcome.

Ya don’t kill the dog. The dog was doing what it was told and trained to do. It’s the cops that know better, and it’s the cops who are at fault for treating this guy like he was wanted for extremely violent crimes.

“For “disturbing the peace” ?
I’m finding increasingly difficult to support law enforcement...”

765,000 sworn officers in the U.S. You’re judging them all by this incident?

“West Jordan police told the Salt Lake Tribune that the body camera footage ‘shows only one aspect of the entire incident and that Hoogveldt resisted arrest’.”

Oh do tell Officer Brownshirt.

How did he resist? So effing what if he didn’t stand up.

What if he did stand up?

That mangy animal would have attacked him any way and in fact, does while the other jack booted thugs are attempting to handcuff the guy.

None of these gave one hoot about the safety of that man and they drop a heavy wooden chair on his head for good measure....

I believe police attitudes changed when they started hiring vets from the first Gulf War that came home with post traumatic stress injuries. I had a friend who came home deeply changed... and he went into policework after... I had no issues with him since were were friends... but the mindset was there... “Us vs. Them”.

“They are quite friendly and let people skate on things that a Dallas pig would not.”

The communist black mayor of our city, whose name, ironically, is Marks, has hired solely to enhance revenue. The cops seem to do little else but write code violations. Perhaps they feel, justifiably, I think, they aren’t liked.

They maintain a department whose sole purpose is seizing property. They seized a house on a valuable downtown lot from a black lady whose underage grandson allegedly sold drugs from her porch. The paper said that if she hadn’t owned this half million dollar property outright they’d never have seized it. That’s the kind of police state we live in. Let’s not even talk about the code enforcement cameras and how they turned down the yellow to the three second minimum because they weren’t getting enough revenue.

Part of it is just raising the revenue to pay themselves; they have a vested interest in issuing as many tickets as possible. Look at how it played out in the news when the NYPD stopped issuing tickets to protest DiBlasio’s lack of support last year; the loss of revenue to the city was incredible (and shameful).

I think we view the tactics of police nationwide as out of control and they are completely unaccountable.

Without a warrant, a cop asking me to move from the couch has just as much power as you do to ask me to move from the couch.

No, and if you attack me for it, expect to pay.

Just because there is a badge and fancy uniform doesn't mean they have the power. They, and you, like it when they do.

Nope. You control your animal and quit making excuses for unlawful behavior.

The dog’s handlers are 100% responsible here.

The victim didn’t get up off the couch, but he did have his hands up and clearly appeared unarmed.

In fact the homeowner appeared to have on handcuffs on his right wrist prior to the cops entering the room..WTF?

I have all the respect in the world for veterans, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for combat veterans to come back and become police officers.

Throw a role around the a**holes and maybe opinions will change. Until then I have exactly the same feelings.

I no longer trust most cops. And they’ve largely brought it upon themselves.

He didn’t stand up because he would have had to put his hands down on the couch to do so.

I always appreciated the scene in various movies where the creature or animal takes the victims face.(Jurassic Park, Abominable, etc.) I therefore appreciate this.

You may be reflecting the attitude engendered by constant media presentations of police bungling. The media knowingly presents only the bad, not the thousands of daily harmless interactions between cops and citizens. Remember media now reflects the extreme left.
