Very interesting. Thorium is so low-level radioactive it could be shielded with sheet of aluminum foil.

A friend of mine has been proposing this for at least 20 years. Think of this;
Buy an automobile. Drive it 5, 10, 15 years, replace the body with a new mobetta style, update the chassis and you are set for another 5, 10, 15 years.

There’s no profit in it for anyone. That’s why.

I guess the fly in the ointment is the price of the power plant itself. Are we talking several thousand or tens of thousands? Even if it can be reused in a new chassis and/or body (The same thing?) if the price is, say $35,000 for the power unit, it would still be a significant hurdle to overcome.

Still, an interesting premise.

Until you bombard it with neutrons and you start creating U232 which is a hard gamma emitter.
With a half life of 68 years, you would be dead before the car rusted out.
This is the chief problem with Thorium energy.

Then a country that is nuke-friendly should pursue this. Maybe the French.

“Very interesting. Thorium is so low-level radioactive it could be shielded with sheet of aluminum foil. “

So can Uranium.

And both decay into Radium.

The Algoreans ought to be ecstatic. Yet there is dead silence.

How do you tax it so you can move money from the givers to the takers? That's why there is no response.

Thorium decays into Prtoactinuim after neutron bombardment, then to U-233. The best way to start the reaction is by using U-233. So it is not that simple.

Any possibility that an air conditioner sized Thorium reactor (I would love one in my basement - no electric, gas or oil bills for life) will be developed is negated by the regulatory state that protects Uranium reactors. National security you know.

Thorium is so low-level radioactive it could be shielded with sheet of aluminum foil.

And Polonium is so radioactive your skin can protect you against it.

But don't ingest it. Like poor Alexander here (just a smidgen in his tea):

Because, then, its alpha particles get a shot at your innards with no skin to shield.

It took Alexander's docs until T - 3 days (for him) to figure out what he had. But, then Scotland Yard took over and traced the substance eastward all across Europe ... Look for a big parade on YouTube Mother's Day.

They claim to be a US company but the below is on their home page. Obviously written by someone from an Eastern European country ...

Project Description: R & D and manufacturing complex for the building of Laser Power Systems, a highly differentiated, unique and significantly superior product. At this time the 2.5 Mkw High speed generators have been building and are being tested by the USAF. The 2.5 Mkw unit is a 1/10th the size of conventional generators at only 28 x 21 inches and 360 lbs., number of other sizes, 5Kw, 30Kw. 90Kw, 200Kw, 1.2 Mkw have also been built and tested under a number of development programs and larger units are being designed to meet the demands of the commercial power industry. The Tesla turbines are simple and cheap to build the one in the picture is 75% Complete but is just a new prototype design that has much application. The complete system, MaxFelaser, turbine, need to be sized to the generator that it would be powering. At this time more than 20 years of research and development has gone into these technologies. To produces a complete prototype systems will take 3 to 6 months and another 6 to 12 month for small scale manufacturing to start and 12 to 24 months for larger scale production to be in place. This time scale is based on minimum investments of 250 million dollars over a 3 year period. It would be possible to fast

A person at Los Alamos explained it to me this way...

“Imagine in your wildest Science Fiction dreams what technology we possess. Add 100 years and you will be close.

“The problem is that the world has become a complex, interconnected place. Let’s say we could put a reactor of some sort in everyone’s house and make the power grid a thing of the past. The economic repercussions both domestically and internationally would be severe and likely lead to war as many national economies collapsed.

“Our technological advantage is our ace in the hole. Should a foreign power threaten the existence of the United States, not only do we have the capability of destroying the aggressor, but we can do so in ways you can’t even imagine.

“The rise of non-state hostiles is an outgrowth of the awareness of this situation on the international stage. No country dares to directly challenge us. They are reduced to attacks by proxy. Annoying, and in the case of 9/11 costly, but hardly an existential threat.

“Our threat now comes from within. Should we lose the will to use the power at our disposal, we are just as doomed as if we didn’t have it all.
