I thought that our sun was bigger than about 80% of the other stars.

No it's a yellow dwarf. I guess it's just a bit smaller than average.

Betelgeuse in the left shoulder of Orion is 1000 times the diameter of the Sun and would almost engulf Jupiter.

If I am reading the Harvard Stellar chart right the radii of a yellow dwarf is bigger than 88.55% of other stars, orange dwarfs and red dwarfs.
