David Letterman reportedly made a sexist joke at a taping of "Late Show" Monday night that left many audience members stunned, the New York Post reports.
Letterman took questions from his audience and one college staffer reportedly asked the talk show host what advice he would give this year's graduates.
A source told the Post Letterman responded, "Treat a lady like a wh-re, and a wh-re like a lady." When the 68-year-old's joke was met with stone silence, Letterman quickly added they should "eat a lot of salad" and be nice to others, the source told The Post.
"I turned to my wife and was, like, 'What?' " the source told the New York Post. "It was really the first joke of the evening, and it seemed like an odd choice."
However, a source close to the show told the paper that the joke "got a big laugh."
A spokesman for Letterman told the Post, "I can't confirm the accuracy of that" and declined to comment further.

Letterman was actually quoting Wilson Mizner who was a manager of The Brown Derby restaurant as well as a playwright.

He is a bitter old man, and at one time he used to be a comedian.
Frankly if he is single and had a consensual relations with someone of the legal age of consent, what is the crime? It wasn’t like he was doing 13 yr old family members. Anyone holding a grudge against a senior for having relations with an adult intern 1/3 his age either has no imagination or is jealous.
good catch. I knew I had heard that somewhere before
That’s old stuff, learned that years ago and I think
ie was from someone famous too, might have been my dad.
What’s sexist about that? I heard that in boot camp when I was 17.
The world has changed. Being offended is the new manners
He turned so mean and stupid as he grew older.
It’s an old saying that I heard years ago.
So What?
