I have a Junior Bonner story!
A fellow portrait artist at a craft fair was a gal who’d been a hand on the set of Junior Bonner, with a cool story about it.
Everyone was taking a break, so she mosied over to the empty rodeo stands where another hand was relaxing. They struck up a friendly conversation for about 20 minutes til she realized it was McQueen himself! Couldn’t believe how down-to-earth and personable he was. Boy was she thrilled.
That’s a cool story. I’ve heard McQueen used to like to hang out with the stunt men on his films and was a very real, down-to-earth guy. In the final years of his life, he became a Christian.
Sidenote: I recently purchased a bluray of another McQueen film, “The Sand Pebbles” and watched it last night. If I ever find it available on the internet, I’ll post if for a MFASA.
Excellent film with a great cast - the bar fight gets stopped when the band plays the Star Spangled Banner - all the cowpokes quit fighting and took off their hats. Another time.

Loved that movie and every other movie McQueen made.
The yellow dog that you see in the movie is the grandson to Spike the dog, from the movie Old Yeller (1957).
Actually, this is one of McQueen’s sleepers. A very good movie. Not quite up there with “The Rievers” but a damn good performance, anyway.
That’s oone of my dad’s favorite movies :p

What an outstanding film. Great directing, wonderful cast, and a standout score by Jerry Goldsmith. Plus a beautiful, young Candy Bergen was easy on the eyes :)
Indeed. Also, it’s interesting that its director(Robert Wise) made “The Sound of Music”(another classic but very different type of picture) immediately prior to it.

Thanks for those sites. I read somewhere that Mr. Wise was so proud of the film he held annual screenings to which the cast and crew were invited. Truly a classic.
