A little change of pace tonight with our first science fiction film at the DfB Theatre. A mysterious Pacific storm engulfs the USS Nimitz, sending it back in time almost 40 years, just hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Starring Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, and Katharine Ross.

Good movie and worth another watch. Thanks!

I’ve been watching older movies recently so I’ll add this to my list.
These were before my time so I’m glad we have people on FR that can refer us to movies worth the watch. There’s so much in movies today with bad actors! ...and candy apple plots.
Horrible ending. How could you not show the battle???
What a cop out!
Give the people what they want. The sequels would have been awesome as the carrier moves on to Germany.
Here is a question: Could one carrier win the war by itself if it did not have nukes? F-15’s are great but where do you get the replacement ammo and fuel in 1941? Would have been a great TV series as the US struggles to create ammo and jet fuel that would work.
LOL...me too.
Cheesy, but...kind of fun. I have always been a bit of a sucker for movies with a time travel twist, but the fact there are Tomcats in it really puts the hook in it for me!
They did have a part of the movie they filmed where one of the Tomcats got a lot closer to the water than anyone liked...
LOL...I love your post! Head em off at the pass!
I want an alternate ending where the carrier and F-14s fight WWII. :)
I hate that cliche.
LOL, the fact that it is so hackneyed is what makes it so much fun to employ!
I know on some alternate history websites, there are people who did write a “what if” the Nimitz remained in 1941. I don’t think things like fuel and gun ammo would be much of a problem for 1941 tech to recreate although the spares for the aircraft and such would be once they run out. I can see the 1941 world getting a jumpstart, you might be able to field 1950’s era jets within a few years.
Ive heard that in 1941 kerosene and 20mm ammo already existed,,,, It might be just a rumor
There’s a really good book trilogy called Axis of Time that follows up on this same concept with the ship(s) staying in the past and changing the future.
The juxtaposition between the 1940’s mores and the 21st century ones was very telling.
With a African-American carrier commander, and a Indian woman commanding a nuclear sub, talk about a culture clash.
And of course, there’s “Hillary Clinton, the best war-time president the US ever had.”
Read the books and you’ll understand.
FWIW, the book this movie was based on, was with a nuclear sub, and not an aircraft carrier.
And I think an even wilder ending.

Love this movie, and I’m now super interested in the book you’ve mentioned. Thanks for the tip!
"Splash the zeroes! I say again, splash the zeroes!"
That’s interesting - do you recall the name of the book, or the author?
"...In one scene where an F-14 "thumps" a Zero by flying under and streaking upward in front of the slower aircraft, the resultant "jet blast" of turbulent air was so intense that the control columns of both of the Zeros in the scene were violently wrenched out of the pilots' hands and caused both aircraft to momentarily tumble out of control. The lead pilot's headset, along with his watch were ripped off and out of the open canopy of his Zero, resulting in a few anxious moments as the F-14 pilots were unable to establish contact. During the engagement when a Zero fires on a F-14, in order to get on the "six" of the low and slow Zero, the jet fighter did a low pullup that ended just 100 ft above the ocean in a screaming recovery..."
I watched an interview with one of the Tomcat pilots, and he was shrugging it off with a "yeah, that's the way we fly" kind of response, smiling slyly as he talked, but the other pilot they interviewed said some people up the chain were pissed about the low altitude event, because they weren't supposed to go under 500 feet or something like that during those scenes...
