Former Destrehan High School teacher Shelley Dufresne pleaded guilty to obscenity Thursday (April 9), admitting in court that she had sex with a 16-year-old student. The plea lets her and the student avoid a public trial and allows her to avoid a three-year prison sentence.
She must spend 90 days at an inpatient mental health facility, serve three years of active probation and pay a $1,000 fine. If she fails to enter the court-approved mental health facility by the end of August, she must report to the St. Charles Parish jail Sept. 1 for a 90-day sentence, Judge Anne Simon said during the plea hearing at the Hahnville courthouse.
Dufresne also agreed to surrender her teaching license. With the parents of her former student sitting in the front row of the courtroom, Dufresne admitted to having "consensual sexual intercourse with a juvenile," as detailed in the carnal knowledge law.
"Is it true?" Simon asked Dufresne. "Yes, ma'am," she replied.
Dufresne left the courthouse at 11:35 a.m., with her mother. She and her attorney, Deanne Williams, would not comment to a reporter.
The student's parents, his mother appearing angry as she stared at Dufresne, also would not speak with reporters. They were accompanied by an attorney who sat with them during the hearing.
Dufresne, a 32-year-old Montz resident who is married and has three children, was one of two Destrehan High teachers arrested last fall on charges of having sex with the same student. Their arrests touched off a flurry of gossip and speculation in Destrehan and online, particularly over the notion of women in authority positions seducing -- or molesting -- an under-aged boy, and contributed to Louisiana's reputation for inappropriate teacher-student relationships.

Yup. There was another similar case recently where the judge gave the teacher a slap on the wrist and practically apologized to her for having to give her the minimum sentence. Pretty much saying she’d done the kid a favor.
Had the sexes there been reversed, male teacher and female student? The judge might have let the teacher walk. After giving the the girl’s father a heads up that he was sending the teacher out the back door, without police escort and where he’d convieniently left a gun and a shovel.
Sentence far too light for an authority figure, the usual lechers notwithstanding.
